Jason Woodbury was appointed District Judge in Department 1 by Governor Joe Lombardo after the retirement of Judge James T. Russell on October 31, 2024.  Prior to his appointment, Judge Woodbury served as the Carson City District Attorney.  He was first elected District Attorney in 2014 and then re-elected in 2018 and 2022.

In 2025, Judge Woodbury was designated and certified as the water law judge for the First Judicial District.    

Judge Woodbury was born in Reno and raised in Elko.  He graduated from Elko High School in 1991 and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Nevada in 1995 before attending the University of Utah School of Law where he was Executive Editor of the Utah Law Review.  He came to Carson City after graduating law school and passing the bar exam in 1998 to begin his legal career as the law clerk for Judge Mike Griffin, who was the Department 1 District Judge from 1979 until 2007.  Judge Woodbury then joined the Carson City District Attorney’s office as a prosecutor in 1999 where he worked 4 years under District Attorney Noel Waters.  During that time, he was also a part-time instructor at Western Nevada College, teaching classes in Criminal Law, Evidence and Criminal Procedure.  He later entered private practice where he worked over 10 years beginning with the law firm of Crowell, Susich, Owen & Tackes, which later merged into the statewide firm of Kaempfer Crowell.

Judge Woodbury and his wife, Stacy, were married at the Gold Hill Hotel in 2006.  Their 3 children were all raised in Carson City.

While Carson City District Attorney, Judge Woodbury was an active member of the Nevada District Attorneys Association, serving as President in 2019 and Secretary/Treasurer from 2020 to 2023.  He also was a regular instructor at Nevada’s Police Officer Standards and Training Academy on the subjects of Constitutional Law; Crimes Against Persons; Crimes Against Property; and Laws of Arrest.  Prior to taking the bench, Judge Woodbury served as on the Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada and was President in 2008.  He was also a founding member of the Western Nevada affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).  Judge Woodbury graduated from the Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Carson City program in 2011. 

In his free time, Judge Woodbury enjoys cheering on the Carson Senators athletic and JROTC teams, leatherworking and learning about Nevada history.
